Does my e-bike or LEV battery need a passport?

Yes. LMT batteries (those powering light means of transport such as e-bikes, e-scooters and light electric vehicles) require a digital product passport regardless of capacity once placed on the EU market from 18 February 2027 under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.

When is the deadline?

18 February 2027. From that date, in-scope batteries placed on the EU market must carry a passport accessible via a QR data carrier. The core deadline has not moved, even as some adjacent obligations shifted.

What counts as an LMT battery?

Under Art. 3 of the regulation, an LMT (light means of transport) battery powers wheeled vehicles that can run on an electric motor alone, such as e-bikes and e-scooters. This class carries the passport duty with no capacity threshold.

Question 4

My industrial battery is under 2 kWh. Am I in scope?

Accepted Answer

The passport obligation applies to industrial batteries above 2 kWh (Art. 3). At or below 2 kWh an industrial battery is currently outside the passport duty. LMT batteries, however, are in scope at any capacity, so check the category carefully.

Who is legally responsible for the passport?

The economic operator that places the battery on the EU market, usually the importer, is responsible for the passport being accurate, complete, accessible and up to date. The obligation cannot be delegated to a non-EU supplier.

Question 6

We import from a non-EU supplier. Does that change anything?

Accepted Answer

No. If you place the battery on the EU market, the duty is yours regardless of where it was made. Your supplier is a data source, not the responsible operator. Our supplier data-request template helps you collect exactly what the passport needs.

Do you certify or verify my battery data?

No. We are not a test lab or a certifier. Carbon-footprint values, test data and supply-chain claims are declared by you as the responsible operator; we validate the structure and completeness of the passport, not the truth of the declarations.

Everything from data to hosted passport: a scope checker, a guided intake that maps your supplier documents onto the required attributes, a hosted passport at a stable web address with the mandated access tiers, and label-ready QR data carriers, all under your own EORI.

What data goes into a passport?

Around 90 Annex XIII attributes: identity and manufacturer, chemistry and composition, carbon footprint and recycled content, performance and durability, hazardous substances and due-diligence, each disclosed according to its access tier.

What are access tiers?

Annex XIII splits the passport into what the public may see, what parties with a legitimate interest may see, and what market-surveillance authorities may see. The same passport serves the correct subset to each reader; enforcing this is a legal requirement.

How does the QR code work?

Each battery carries a data carrier, a QR code built on a GS1 Digital Link, printed or engraved on the product. Scanning it opens the passport at a stable web address, following the EN 18220 data-carrier standard.

What happens to my passports if you disappear?

Accepted Answer

Passports are legal artifacts that must stay reachable for years. That is why export and escrow are built in: you can export a re-hostable bundle at any time, and a data-escrow arrangement keeps your passports available even if we are not.

Can I take my data with me?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You can export a self-contained bundle (the passport pages, the underlying data, the QR-to-address map, version history and access-tier rules) that you can re-host at the same addresses. Being able to take your data with you is built in from the start.
