Battery Passport Requirements for Industrial Batteries Over 2 kWh
Industrial batteries above 2 kWh, including stationary storage, need a digital passport from 18 February 2027. Here is what the requirement covers for importers of industrial batteries.
Industrial batteries are one of the categories caught by the digital battery passport. From 18 February 2027, an industrial battery over 2 kWh placed on the EU market must carry one. This guide explains what that means for importers of industrial and stationary storage batteries.
What counts as an industrial battery over 2 kWh
The EU Battery Regulation treats industrial batteries as their own category, and the passport duty applies to those above a capacity of 2 kWh. Stationary energy storage systems are included where they meet that description. Below the 2 kWh line, an industrial battery is treated differently, which is why capacity is the first thing to confirm for this category.

What the passport has to carry
The passport is a structured record reachable from a data carrier on or near the battery and kept available online. The content is defined in Annex XIII of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 and, for an industrial battery, covers its identity and chemistry, carbon footprint, recycled content, performance and durability, hazardous substances and safety information, and the supporting documentation behind those figures. As with every category, the data is served in access tiers, so some fields are public and others are reserved for parties with a legitimate interest or for authorities. See battery passport access tiers.
Where industrial batteries differ in practice
The obligations are the same in shape as for other categories, but industrial batteries bring their own practical points:
- Capacity is the gate. Confirm the 2 kWh line first; it decides whether the rest applies.
- System versus cell. Be clear about what you are placing on the market, the pack or system as supplied, so you passport the right unit.
- Longer service lives. Stationary storage often stays in service for many years, which makes the hosting-continuity duty especially important. See how long a passport must stay online.
- Performance and durability data tends to be more detailed for industrial products, so start the supplier request early.
Who is responsible
As with every category, the duty falls on the economic operator that places the battery on the EU market, normally the importer under its own EORI number. A non-EU manufacturer can supply the data but cannot hold the obligation for you. See who is responsible for the battery passport.
